While he incorporates "sumi-ka" (carbonization) as an environmental technology in businesses, as a sumi artist, he is producing a variety of sumi works both at home and abroad.
Kohei Matsushita, a researcher and artist in this field, specializes in sumi, looks at sumi from all angles, and discovers a range of new possibilities.
■ Profile
Began firing sumi in 1990. Improved knowledge of sumi and discovered its possibilities while researching environmental technologies and soil amelioration. Built on research, employs "sumi-ka", technology based on thermal decomposition, as environmental technology for business.
In 1996, in response to a request from a store design firm, became involved in space presentation incorporating sumi. Since then has developed production activities as a sumi coordinator, racking up many achievements in space presentation for hotels, restaurants, hospitals and other establishments.
Worked on space design and sumi space coordination for sumi gallery, ＳＵＭＩ ＮＥＷ ＹＯＲＫ, which opened in New York's SOHO district in 2004, where he has permanent exhibits.
Held one-man show at GAN gallery in Omotesando, Tokyo in 2006, and continues to produce work both in Japan and overseas.
